John D. Lovi is a partner in the Litigation Department of Steptoe & Johnson LLP, where he is a member of the Corporate, Securities and Finance practice group. Mr. Lovi focuses his practice on complex litigation involving securities, derivatives, mergers and acquisitions, and commercial transactions. Much of his practice involves an international component.
Mr. Lovi has been involved in a number of high-profile securities cases over the past decade, including prominent cases involving failed derivative swap transactions. His recent cases have resulted in clients avoiding or recovering more than $500 million in derivative losses through settlements or court awards. The scope of his international practice extends to matters involving Korea, Hong Kong, China, Indonesia, Argentina, England, Uzbekistan, and the United Arab Emirates. Mr. Lovi also has represented public and privately-held companies, including broker-dealers and hedge funds, in enforcement actions brought by the SEC, NYSE and NASD, as well as defended such companies in securities and consumer class actions.
Mr. Lovi also provides risk-management counseling to numerous clients involved in investment banking, securities trading, mergers and acquisitions, and highly-structured derivative and swap transactions. This pre-litigation counseling includes advice regarding ways to reduce litigation exposure in the structuring of commercial, international, and financial transactions.
Mr. Lovi is a trial lawyer with extensive experience in both the state and federal courts. He also has conducted many arbitrations before the NYSE, NASD, International Chamber of Commerce, and American Arbitration Association.
Mr. Lovi’s representative clients include several foreign governments, as well as international commercial and investment banks, broker-dealers, insurance companies, and other financial institutions. Mr. Lovi also represents several significant foreign and domestic manufacturers of medical products, oil and gas pipelines and refineries, and military defense products, as well as internet service providers and other internet and technology-related companies.
